Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out?

A lot of people know that it’s common to have your wisdom teeth extracted. But is it always necessary? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always a necessary procedure to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Below we’ll look at some of the reasons why it’s a good idea to have the procedure done and what some of the indications are that you may need to have it done in the future.

Your wisdom teeth are hidden in your gums

If they can’t normally emerge, they’ll become impacted in your jaw. This can sometimes cause an infection or cyst that can damage your bone support or other roots.

Come through your gums partially

Since it’s hard for you to see this area and clean it, when you have wisdom teeth that are only partially emerged it can make a passage that can attract bacteria which cause oral infection and gum diseases.

They’re crowding teeth nearby

If your wisdom teeth don’t have ample room so that they can emerge properly, it’s possible they’ll damage or crowd nearby teeth.
Sometimes a dentist will recommend having your wisdom teeth extracted if they haven’t fully emerged. A lot of times they’ll say it’s better to remove them when you’re younger before bone and roots are formed fully and when you’ll likely recover more quickly after surgery. That’s why there are young adults who are having their wisdom teeth removed before they’re having any problems with them.
Based on the ADA, removal of your wisdom teeth might be necessary when you’re experiencing changes in your teeth’s area like:

  • Cysts filled with fluid
  • Damage to close teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Lots of tooth decay
  • Pain
  • Soft tissue infections always happening in back of the last tooth on the bottom
  • Tumors

It’s not always clear whether or not someone’s wisdom teeth should be removed. If you are concerned about it, you can speak with your oral surgeon or dentist. They’ll help you to decide whether or not it’s a good idea for you and your oral health to remove your wisdom teeth.
